Maxim has, for some time, put out signals that it prefers we use the current versions. The IAP doesn't work on the '420, so that's off the list.

One of the benefits of the DS89C4x0 series, in this case, where x represents 3..5, is that all the features work similarly, with the notable exception of the obvious differences, which would be the FLASH size.

That wouldn't stop me from using a 420 if I were a student or experimentor who just happened to have one on hand.
