Many character LCD's, and you didn't specify what sort of LCD (Liquid Crystal Display), use the Hitachi HD44780 controller IC. Many others use controller IC's that emulate the HC44780. You have no control over what the controller IC does to the actual liquid crystal, but you have control over the commands given to the controller IC.

I'd suggest you search for a datasheet for the Hitachi HD44780 or one of its "compatible" scions.

That will provide all the information you need regarding initialization.

This problem comes up at 4-6 week intervals, too, so a search of the message board wouldn't be totally unproductive either. It comes up so frequently that one might think it's a recurring homework problem.

What sort of LCD module do you want to use? Does it have a brand name or a part number? What is the controller IC? What is the configuration?
