We do a lot of different projects. Some are low volume, reasonably priced items with lots of wiggle room for uC selection. Others are low cost, high volume in a very competitive marketplace and we not only needed to eliminate the LCD R/W* but also need to re-use the 4 LCD data lines for other functions when the uC is not talking to the LCD.

Normally I'm not one to waste my time squeezing out every byte of RAM, cycle of MHz or use of pin, ... but there are times when we and others just like us, need to. Certainly it drives the NRE up though and makes me just a little bit more insane ;-)
