Many years ago, someone told me that some LCD's use a positive bias for contrast. For a long time, therefore, I had my contrast pot connected between +5 and -5. It works, of course, but I found that it seldom is necessary to use a positive bias. Datasheets for the specific display module being used help more than just the one for the HD44780, though you can't expect to do much without the latter.
