Mike, I really don't think you understood the point I was making. You can use any port bits you like in any order, as long as your code accomodates this. I posted an example of how this would be done. No need to change the ascii codes etc. I can assure you I've had a little experience with these issues.

By the way, are your LCDs 'jedec' standard?
