I have probably mentioned it - I was pushed into a PIC project as the 16F84 was the only available (in relatively small quantities and in our location) cheap microcontroller with internal EEPROM.
It caused me severe nausea but I succeeded to implement DES on it. How good the whole project was cancelled... :-)

So, think of it. Me, PIC- and C-hater - and HiTech, the PIC-C maker... :-)
