Many 8051 applications can be built and will work fine without using an RTOS. In many cases a simple 'work loop' (Copyright Erik) for the non critical tasks and interrupts for the critical ones is all that is required.
What this approach does not do is provide priorities for tasks (except interrupts) or allow pre-emption (except for interrupts). So provided all your task priority and pre-emption requirements can be met using interrupts then there is no need for an RTOS. The other problem with this approach is that it is essential that workloop tasks exit quickly when there is nothing for them to do i.e you must make sure they do not sit waiting for RI to change state for example. When they do have something to do they must also finish it as fast as possible to make sure the other tasks in the loop get polled frequently enough. As applications become larger and more complex this method becomes difficult to design, modify and maintain. At this point you should consider using an RTOS. With 8051 variants commonly having 64K of code space and many integrated peripherals there are certainly cases where using an RTOS on an 8051 project is justified. Ian |
