I'm not necessarily wanting you to eat your words, but I am compelled to point out that there have been a number of 8051 RTOS-based products where the notion of 'RTOS' was not merely marketing-speak.
Examples of very early 8051 RTOS implementation come from none other than Intel themselves. Way back in the early 1980's Intel produced OEM distributed control modules using 8044/8051 running an RTOS. From the Product Brief section in Intel's iDCX 51 User's Guide: Being a real-time, multitasking nucleus, the iDCX 51 Executive is well suited for control applications that require scheduling of multiple jobs and fast response to external stimuli. The iDCX 51 Executive is suitable for standalone as well as for distributed applications.
