very welcome "limitation", it allow the superfast 100MHz 1 clock pipelined architecture, (I belive that the internal flash is wider than 8 bits) which would be difficult to implement with external memory.

However it could easily run from the onboard SRAM - 10ns access time is nothing spectaclar for SRAM so it could run rght off the 8-bit SRAM. Note how fast MOVX on those chips is - parallelism would not help there.
So this one IS a design limitation.
