Back then, quite probably, you needed 8255/8155/8156 - because processors had no on-chip memory, so you had to use up most of your IO ports for the address & data busses to external memory. These days, processors with plenty of on-chip memory, and loads of ports are commonplace - so the effort to "make it work" is completely wasted! I've yet to see even one "solution" that replaces an 8255 or, for that matter, an 8155, that does better than the original. Eh?? Bringing it all on-chip has many advantages - easier PCB design, reduced EMC issues, reduced BoM, etc, etc,... |
