The NMIY-0031 board has done exactly that and it uses the "standard" dual-row x 0.100" (2.54mm) connectors to accomodate their expansion scheme.

Have a look at the website for this board

(remove the CR/LF's!)

and examine the downloadable documentation. You'll see exactly what they did.
