I tried laying out the standard 40 pin PDIP '52 + latch & SRAM ... and it takes up a sizeable percentage of the available board space
you are aware, I hope, that both SILabs (several) and NXP (p89c668) have 8k RAM inside the chip available. I do believe that more exist, if interested, try the Keil device database

I just did and they are coming out of the woodwork, I even saw more than 8k RAM for some.
