With a proper devboard the amount of wires you need to fiddle with decreases considerably.

If you have those which have only an array of unconnected round or sqare pads, throw them away.

It's nice to have a PCB done, but sometimes the circuit is not worth drawing and waiting, especially if it's only a micro (packed with all the goodies inside) and a few discretes around.

I've got the Mikroelektronika Easy 8051A (sorry Craig!). It dumps the ports onto header pins that are easy to attach to ribbon cables and drop onto a perfboard. Lots of toys on the board, and a nifty USB programmer, I think I posted about it a week or two ago. I need to make a PCB shim with a couple push buttons so I can program the ED2, it ties off the PSEN pin. Otherwise, a nice learning board, with the PDIP limitation.



I'm going to get a SiLabs kit. Erik and Andy sold me. :-)
