While this is absolutely true, what prevents you to surface-mount traditional through-hole parts?
I've done this many times even with SMD pads, when I e.g. didn't have an SMD LED for a prototype; of course this won't work at a multi-leg chip scale, but then you can design your pads appropriately.

We are not talking about production volumes, do we.
