I'm not sure I like the idea of "see the Bible for the list of standard features, and here's where this chip deviates from the standard."

Have a look at e.g. the NXP LPC93x series. These chips have just about as many bells and whistles as any SILabs chip. http://www.standardics.nxp.com/products/...lpc936.pdf , is a VERY easy read (75 vs 300+ pages). It does require that you ar familiar with "the bible' e.g. T0 and T1 are 'described' in less than one page.
