#94470 - Full-function debugger Responding to: ???'s previous message |
It's clear from the interesting comments I've seen, that the debugger source I'm after isn't available.
But ... let me clear up a few things. First of all, I have a shelf full of ICE equipment. I also have JTAG equipment/software. However, the devices I'm frequently called upon to support, namely those in applications I designed for my clients in the '80's, and '90's still require my occasional if not frequent attention, and JTAG is not a factor there. ICE hardware, while often quite useful, when it works as advertised, ALWAYS has limitations that make it advantageous to use a resident debugger whenever possible because the hardware then doesn't get in the way, even if only physically. It does, however, often present frustrating limitations that were never a problem when resident debuggers were the only thing we had available. It's like those old computers I'm often embarassed to admit I still use from time to time. They still turn out the payroll, etc. just as they did in the '80's. I've been a computer professional since the '60's and a microprocessor applications designer since the '70's. This means there are few things in that arena that I haven't encountered. It also means that I've been unable to avoid scrapes with poorly designed hardware, poorly engineered (if one can call it that) software, and outrageous misrepresentations of what a given piece of hardware/software can and will do. I've heard lots of excuses, but never been particularly overwhelemed with the capabilities of such hardware. The thing to keep at the forefront of your thinking in this arena is that those guys whose income is derived from what you buy are not interested in helping you. They're only interested in getting between you and your dough. They'll tell you and sell you whatever they can get by with and, most of the time, they lie ... sometimes they tell big ones, and sometimes they tell little ones, but they always lie. That's their job. RE |
