OK, so we're dealing with ancient products without the benefit of JTAG, etc.

But I still don't see why all the functionality needs to be resident in the 8051.

Surely it would make more sense just to have a basic "kernel" resident in the 8051, and let a PC do the "clever" stuff like assembly, disassembly, etc?

Or do you actually still use a real, dumb VT52 terminal...?
