Aha! now that could be a real "threat" to both the 8051 and the AVR - and all the other little 8-bitters, for that matter.

However, there are so many niches to fill that I'm sure there's plenty of room for all the different architectures & manufacturers.

What I can't see is any single-source architecture (AVR, PIC, COP, et al) becoming universal: that's the real thing about both ARM and 8051 - they are both architectures, neither is tied to any one specific manufacturer.
