what is the big difference between the SILabs USB 'dongle' and the Atmel 'programming cable' ?

The Hobbyist Attitude. My Boss would not want me wasting time making cables. Just buy one. Free software? Only if you do not have to waste time getting it to work.

Pay for a compiler? The $100 USD ( or free with the class) compiler produced larger, slower, inefficient code. A good $1000 USD compiler would have been welcome.

The time / memory saving good tools provide are worth it for the professional. For a Hobbyist Time is cheap and money scarce.
