Providing the cheap tools for the hobbyists has a sideeffect, maybe not so pronounced in the USA but certainly here: today, I cannot find a freshly graduated (read: young, full of energy and not so expensive :-) ) engineer fluent in '51 (all of them are today over 30 and most of them in management); but almost everybody "speaks" AVR today.

This will apparently shift towards the ARMs within a few years.

All of this is regardless of quality of the chips, tools, support etc.
