AVR might not sweep out the 51 but it will be on prefered list of MCU, they are more an opponent to the Pic and their promotional effort are comparable to Microchips. In providing good, free programming tools to users and alot of supports to beginners they aims at new comers: students, layman, hobbyists people with limited knowledge and budget, but who might eventually be come experts in near future and their distributors are truly wide spread. We now can buy all kind of AVRs in Viet Nam at very acceptable price. AVR will not be used on Mars Rovers in the near future but alot of new generation engineer will know and are able to use AVR in their applications
I think that is the aims of Atmel.
PS: the 90S8515 made a swell 60kw spot welder controller with 7 segments led read outs for power level, cylinder timers,another fine MCU to use!
