The rS485 doesn't look like it has any protection. My usual protection is sa5.0 transzorbs and 100mA polyswitches in series along with 10R resistors on the + and - signals.
.. is to use the LT "industrial strength" 485 transciever http://www.linear.com/pc/produc...1017,P1713 it can handle 15kV spike and 60V steady.
