Ok, but what is lost due to poor layout will be lost for ever and you need no longer to worry about 'thermal gardients'...

By the way, even 8bit systems can heavily suffer from poor layout. Assume you get a 100mV spike on analog ground due to an unwanted digital ground return current, and this right then when ADC samples input voltage. Then even 6bit precision would be lost.
