That thought has crossed my mind, but doesn't that open me up for other variables that might cause more problems.
Why there is that difference on your board between the S and the C only Atmel knows. I talked to a factory engineer and he didn't have any real explanation. I have read the FAQ's you mention and I will do both the cap directly across the chip and DS1812 reset supervisor in the interest of getting this particular customer up and running again. It seems funny that out of 10 machines that this customer received all at once, that 3 are acting up. The rest may follow as time goes on. P.S. Sorry about mis-spelling your name in my first post.
