I still fail to see the idea behind an ISP "programmer". The whole idea behind ISP is that you can get rid of the socket and the associated problems, how do you use a "programmer" with a soldered in chip. Don't forget the jumpers ATMEL people need... Yes, you are right: Kitchen table programmers, which are the ones designed by people trusting too much the datasheets and application notes, are often a mess, because there's hidden knowledge about how to correctly programming the micro. It's very interesting to see, that ATMELS ISP programmer (which is named 'AT89 ISP Tool' or 'ISP cable', by ATMEL himself...) clearly violates everything written in datasheets and applictaion notes. I would recommend to look at reset line with a scope, and what's going on there during a programming session... Especially the reset line and its performance at power-up and power-down is really crucial, when a stable programming is to be performed. And up to now, I never saw a Kitchen table programmer, which controlled the reset line refering to power-up and power-down in a proper way! Kai |
