#117115 - Support and Longevity Responding to: ???'s previous message |

I do not believe my company wants me to look at free items. I was specifically asked to check companies that will be able to give extensive support and will be around for a very long time. Commercial software is no guarantee of good support or long term support. Companies get taken over - Keil for example. Open source software can and often does provide much better support than commercial software. You can often email the authors directly and receive speedy, informed replies. Useful open source software generaly outlives commercial software by a large margin, simply because it is maintained by a community which continues to exist despite the comings and goings of its members. It is also not subject to the vagaries of take overs. Ian |
