I've used Atmel micros now for about ten years. During that time I have run into some issues with the parts, but I've had good response from Atmel and their FAEs. My biggest problems have been with the French designed 89C51CC03, the datasheet was a cut and paste job that shall we just say was lacking. However a local (same timezone) Atmel product manager was able to clarify the datasheet and correct problems. I currently use a lot of AVR parts, and Atmel's support from Norway is great, although the time difference guarantees a reply in days not hours.

Frankly I've had more problems with Winbond, and then I think that was more language issues than timezones: the local FAEs always had to refer to the factory engineers in Taiwan, and questions always got scrambled in the translation process (ever play "telephone"?).
