check out Aldec's VHDL tutorial:

It's free and you can download it after registration.
It has series of lessons and language guide.
I started learning VHDL with it. It's most useful tool for learnin I've ever seen.

If you are new to programmable logig you should start first from something more simple than embedding CPU cores.
