I solved a similar problem by adding a resistor (4K7) in series on TX line that is putting a resistor between pin 14 of MAX232 and pin 2 of serial port connector.
My opinion is that PC serial ports works at 3.3V and the MAX232 overdrive the inputs possibly damaging port.
I hope this small resistor could solve Your problem
