#147446 - Standard
Responding to: ???'s previous message
Richard Erlacher said:
A dead short to either rail, if supplied by the MAX232 wouldn't damage anything. A dead short to GND wouldn't either.

The RS232 standard specifically requires this - also that connecting two driver outputs together won't cause damage.

So I agree: a properly implemented MAX232 circuit should not cause any of the problems described.

Possibilities are, then:

  • The MAX232 circuit is not properly implemented (whether by accident or design);

  • The MAX232 is being damaged by something else;

  • Power supply (eg, grounding) issues are causing the problems;

  • etc?
