#147467 - generally...
Responding to: ???'s previous message
Richard Erlacher said:
that's supposed to be FRAME ground only! It should be on a separate conductor in the cable from the GND (DB25-pin 7).

If you hook power supply GND to that, you will get what you deserve!

... yes, earth (frame ground is maybe more precise, but earth is shorter so I'll stick to it for purpose of this post) and ground are two different things in general. So, the most general picture is even more complex: we have 4 different potentials (E1, G1, E2, G2). What we need indeed is to equalize G1 and G2 before signal pins mate, so the shells have to be on these potentials. Being a system engineer, I don't really care how this happens, but I want this happen. If this means I need to ensure Ex=Gx, I'd go for that.

Btw., Dwhatever25 connectors for RS232 are really rare nowadays, although we all know very well what's in the "RS232-bible"... :-)

PS. [Slightly later]: of course a galvanic decoupling brings us into a yet another situation, with Ex Gx and Gx', figure out what's the proper connection yourself.
