I use MAX232CPE in this prototype without notice and with same config for HIN232
Is it a point ?
I notice that your MAX is not the 'A' type and as such require 1uF charge pump caps, I do not know what the HIN uses.

However, I see no reason that a change of transceiver would make a difference in "damaging COM ports" unless, of course, the pinout is different and you missed that.
