Some where in EE course work it would seem useful to have a course dedicated to making a complete PCB, from idea to a populated and working PCB. Schools could do better bridging the gap between school work and actual work as a EE. Indeed. I don't understand why there's no senior-year course in "practical EE" which covers things like the PCB and PCA processor from schematic to finished product, and BOMs (what they are and why they're important), and how to tell PHBs that what they ask for is impossible (without getting fired), and the like. Engineering school really does create the mindset of the engineer draws a schematic and throws it over a wall for layout. That makes no sense, as the PCB is as much a component of the design as any IC. So you get a bunch of freshouts each year who can't draw schematics or know how to set design rules or any of the stuff you really need to know. To think that I wasted a semester in a course, MGT442, called "Engineering Managment" (I think that was the title) where one of the subjects was -- I shit you not -- how to dress for a job interview. -a |
