In my short time working professionally as a EE (1.5 years) I have found it useful to have your schematics resemble the physical layout.
Agreed, but what about a 14 page schematic that is squeezed onto a 2" * 4" board? (my latest is that)

I recall a very intricate board (in the days when a transistor was a soldered in component and IC was the first 2 letters in ICe cream) where the schematic was redrawn to match the PCB.
