C is a very good language to learn and it will serve you well on a variety of platforms (I use it for 8051/HCxx/Palm/PC/PocketPC).
The tools are mature and the the code generation excellent. Having a good background in assembler will serve you well in your transition to C. It takes a while to become proficient in C but it's well worth the time. Certainly the "terseness" goes away, but it depends a bit on the programmer (proper use of indentation, comments, headers, etc). There are a couple of very good books and the people at espmag.com have great articles for all levels of proficiency. Plus you will be infinitely more employable. Whatever you do, try and learn the "spirit" of C, not just convert code from assembler to C. For instance, proper use of .h files, use local variables where possible and use "static" to limit the scope/visibility of functions and variables. GB |
