I have been programming for the 8051 family for 18 years now and I started with C. Have made a few things in ASM (text-arrays, eeprom-drivers etc.).
In ASM you have at least two main tasks, 1) to build a programme flow so it meets the objective and 2) housekeeping in CPU registers and on the stack, PUSH'ing and POP'ing return adresses etc. etc. In C there is only one thing to concentrate upon, the programme flow. The rest is a job for the Compiler. I am happy with C for microcontrollers because it is high level enough to let me work with what the software is supposed to do with my hardware, without caring about the CPU, still low level enough to let me have easy access to registers, single bits, port pins etc. should I need it.
