#83073 - asm.vs.C forever Responding to: ???'s previous message |
Efficiency can be expressed in terms of:
- code space - data space - time of execution - other (electronic) resources required - prototyping cost - production cost - ease of use - ease of maintenance - general ease of coding (cooperative) - personal ease of coding (preferences) - ease of debugging (potential pitfalls to planning) and probably many other, ergo choices such as these are always a matter of compromise. In discussions like this I always like to question "fitnes for purpose". Speaking particular, I found two major drawbacks of asm vs C I think are really relevant (a personal choice, arguable): - asm routines are often too long to fit to one page, hence hard to understand - asm tempts to use tricks = potential source of problems (this may be also a drawback of C when speaking about C vs Pascal and similar) Jan Waclawek |
