Why is the program to make little programs so big.
1. pretty pictures 2. full on line Doc. 3. It runs on a PC who cans if it is 20meg or 40 meg. 4. It does the job. Note that none of this has anything specifically to do with the the 'C' programming language, nor the compiler - it is all just "support" for the programmer. eg, the actual Keil compiler, C51.exe, is only 780K (the assembler is 201K). It's a command-line app with no pictures, no docs. My full Keil install comes to ~32M - but that includes all the examples, GUI, libraries, includes, RTX51, several debug monitors, etc, etc. The actual compiler itself is only a small fraction - you could do without most of the other stuff if you prefer. I suspect that you probably could fit just the compiler onto a floppy... By way of comparison, my Borland C++ Builder v5 compiler is 846K, and the full install is ~400M!! - but that almost lets you create a whole application without having to write a single line of code! |
