#87636 - 'Common' 'Popular' Responding to: ???'s previous message |
Anil Gupta said:
If C is more popular then Pascal(that too among highly technically & scientifcally skilled community of programmer & engineers) that means user are finding C tech better then Pascal. No, it doesn't. I use 'C' because it is the most widely available and supported. In many ways, Pascal is better - but that is to no advantage if you can't get the tools & the support! :-( Just like 98% (or whatever) of the world's PCs run Windoze - it's not on technical merit, just because that's what most people know. I once worked on a project that used Ada because it was "better" than 'C' - it was a pain, because the debug support was not available. But with software it is not the case. If people finds Pascal better and using & demanding it more then software vendors could have easily switched over to it. No, that is not true. How many people do we get here complaining about the cost of commercial tools? Comparable commercial Pascal & 'C' compilers would undoubtedly have comparable price tags - so it is costly to dump your expensive 'C' compiler and then have to pay for a Pascal compiler! Then there's retraining, and what about all your existing 'C' code...? I've worked on a project with hybrid 'C' and Pascal - it's a real pain. |
