#87711 - Linux penetration Responding to: ???'s previous message |
Erik Malund said:
Lunix has, as far as I recall, been around for about 10 years, and there is hardly any penetration because Windows is the de facto standard. True, although I'd say that is definitely changing. Linux used to be ignored completely. Now, more and more companies are moving to it--at least on the server side, and I think the desktop is only a matter of time. For what most desktop office users need (word processing, spreadsheet, surfing, and maybe listening to music on headphones) Linux works just fine with OpenOffice, Firefox, and the audio player (XMMS). And all for free--and without the cost of virus scanners, spyware-removal programs, with associated administrative costs. Setting it up on my laptop was just as easy--maybe even easier--than installing Windows 98 on my wife's laptop a few months ago. And I was impressed that the laser printer I just bought actually listed the Linux distributions that supported it. I believe this month I'm celebrating my 2-year "Windows-free" anniversary. :) Regards, Craig Steiner |
