#87721 - Linux/Windows security
Responding to: ???'s previous message

1) one of the highest revenue companies in my neck of the woods is Red Hat, their revenue is from Linux.

True, but I'm legally using their Linux distribution and haven't paid them a cent. A large company may decide to, though I would think it'd be cheaper to hire some Linux admins--a single Linux admin can manage a huge number of Linux desktops and, if he has any experience, is going to be able to solve the problems as quickly as Red Hat anyway. I'm glad Red Hat is making money, I'm just personally not sure why people/companies pay them.

Anyway, I'll bet Microsoft is making even more than Red Hat.

2) You just wait. The very fact that the Linux penetration curently is server heavy makes it candy for the bastards. I have no doubt that several miscreants are working on that.

I'm sure they are, but they're going to have a hard time doing any serious damage to a typical Linux system. I'm sure there will be more attempts to infest Linux with virus once there is more Linux penetration, but I'm not yet convinced that it will be effective. The Linux servers that are out there now are a very good "test bed" at proving the security of Linux. Given the choice between a server and some Windows box, a thoughtful hacker would rather take control of a Linux server with huge bandwidth. Yet they are focused on Windows. It's not because there are more Windows users, it's because they're easier targets. If there were effective ways to attack Linux, they'd be out there taking control of hundreds of thousands of Linux boxes to launch their DDoS attacks rather than bothering with puny little end-user systems.

Do remember thet when you invent better Idiot Proofing, someone will, invariable, invent a better Idiot.

True. Eventually Bill Gates will migrate to Linux and they'll have to install improved idiot-proofing in Linux just for him. Once Microsoft starts producing applications for Linux I'm sure they (Linux kernel developers) will have to review all their security since Microsoft is so good at introducing insecurity in new and wonderful ways. :)

Craig Steiner
