English is a very rich language but nonetheless is riddled with ambiguous words, one of which is the word 'free'.
Linux has always been free as in freedom, it has never been free as in beer. The French have a better word for it 'libre'. The only cost you have to pay for Linux is the media and distribution cost. You may choose to pay for a boxed package including support and a textbook but you are free to choose. That's one way Red Hat makes money. They also make a lot from supporting the Linux server software they supply. When you have Linux you are free to do what you like with it. You can read the source code, copy it, change it, contact the author and discuss it, make your own contibutions and have them incorporated. You can even make copies and sell them (for the cost of the media and distribution). Sounds revolutionary not evolutionary to me. Ian |
