There's a good reason why they are called In Circuit Emulators. However close they may be to the real thing they are not, unfortunately, the real thing.

a) how long ago ?
b) which brand ?
c) what difference?

You're very fortunate.
and so are a lot of past and present coworkers, none of which have found a difference between the ICE and the "real thing".
I'm glad to notice that you have qualified your supposed correction with, paraphrasing, 'within the sphere of experience of one particular person'.
I can cite, at least, 12 other persons with the same experience (NO difference) so this is hardly "one particular person"
