While I agree with you that using an ICE is the ultimate tool, for solving those especially hard to solve problems, for the most part I find using the serial port debugging method to be quite useful, especially if you have to debug in the field and usually can't bring all of your equipment with you. Of course, most of the jobs that I have done weren't so time critical that I couldn't spare a couple of milliseconds to recieve and answer a serial command.
