If a chipmaker wants to build an ARM-based microcontroller, or some other function with an ARM core in it, they need a licence from ARM.

But what is the status of the 8051 architecture in this respect?
Do you (still) need a licence from Intel?
Is their copyright still current?

Of course you can buy ready-made 8051 cores, but do you need "permission" from Intel to roll your own?
