When I first started using the new version I made the background white as a temporary measure before selecting a color. Initially I felt the same way as Christian: the pages felt empty. But after awhile it became comfortable and the feeling of "empty" gave way to "uncluttered." I also remembered some people complaining about the greyish background last time the website got a facelift.

As it is the website isn't setting the background color which means most people should actually be able to set the background color to whatever they want by changing their browser configuration.

Color scheme changes are some of the hardest things to get used to and, worse, everyone has different preferences. I think I'm going to wait at least a week and see what people think about the color scheme after everyone has gotten used to the new scheme. At that point I will decide whether I need to modify it or even go to the point of making it configurable on a user by user basis.
