#81954 - Explanation of changes Responding to: ???'s previous message |
1) It logs me off after some period of inactivity (possibly about an hour) in spite of having selected zero for the logoff time. The old forum used to log me off occasionally, maybe once or twice a week but now it's every time. I'll be looking into this. It's a known problem. To solve it in the meantime when you logon to the system click the "Remember me" button before you press the "Login" button. That will keep you form being logged-off. 2) The white background in 'flat' mode is making me go blind. All the other forums I've seen that work in 'flat' mode have pleasant pastel shades for the background, also they alternate the background colour between adjacent posts which really helps. Go to your my account page and select a different "Background Color". This was a common complaint early on and I provided a way to adjust the background color. 3) After posting a reply I am returned to the thread list instead of remaining in the thread I posted to. I may make it optional to return to the same thread you were in. This would not require much coding. 4) I can't get any of the HTML to work in the preview window apart from the quote facility. I don't know if it would work if I posted it - let's try here: [B]Bold[/B] - am I just doing something wrong? That's not HTML. That's "BB code". HTML should use "less than" and "greater than" signs, not brackets. The only BBCode we've adopted here is the "quote" feature. Everything else is HTML, not BBcode. 5) Most of the time when I reply to a post I want the same subject line as that post. Please reinstate the automatic copying of the subject line or allow a blank subject line. The reason for this was given earlier. Yes, virtually everyone wants to use the same subject as was there before. I did the same thing. And it ended up causing threads of 30-100 responses all using the same subject. When someone goes to search for something and all the subjects are the same it is virtually impossible to even guess which messages might be useful short of reading them all. Blanking out the subject and requiring a subject is a small hassle but over time it's going to make it much easier to find messages using the search function or when browsing a thread in threaded mode. 6) The behaviour of the "New" tags seems just as unpredictable as with the old forum, but the other way round. Now almost everything is marked 'New' whether or not I've read it, instead of almost everything *not* being marked 'New'. When you're logged on or logged off? If you're in flat mode also make sure you didn't miss any "new" messages on previous pages of the thread. I.e., if the thread is 4 pages long and you read the first page of the thread and the last page of the tread, there are still new unread messages on pages 2 and 3 that you'll have to read before the "new" flag is removed. Can anyone else comment on any problems they're having with the "new" flag? I'm finding it to be extremely accurate in my case but if others are having different luck I'd very much like to hear about it. Craig, I realise you've put a lot of effort into the forum but I for one would find some sort of 'standard' forum a lot easier to use. None of the "standard" forums provide all the functionality we need and want, nor would it be easy to integrate them with the rest of the website. Prior to making these new modifications to the forum I did review other options. I even found phpBB adequate enough for another website I run (BarcodeIsland). I believe all the other websites I visit regularly use some form of phpBB and I wouldn't have a problem using it here--but I just didn't find it to be adequate for everything that we need at 8052.com.
