While integrated FPGA may be an universal answer to many of the ideas for peripherals, there must be some drawbacks why they are not used widely by now.

Andy, you are probably the most competent to answer: what is/would be the price of such device (with some reasonable(?) density) compared to some better equipped '51? And what about development tools' cost + learning curves?
