#88990 - depends on people and perhaps motivation
Responding to: ???'s previous message
Erik Malund said:
One of the worst toolsets i have seen for a "proprietary architecture" microcontroller architecture was, indeed, GCC based.

And open?
If not, being-gcc based means close to nothing. No scrutiny, no feedback. The usual "proprietary" problem.
Erik Malund said:
As you state "The concept inspires other people in creating the other tools" unfortunately it does not necessarily "inspire other people in creating quality tools"

Completely so; but there is also a huge feedback, quickly suppressing the bad.
On the other hand, being open source, anybody can make improvements to it, including you and me - if you or I have enough motivation to do so. This is quite different with the "provided" tools, where if you desire any change and/or improvement, the only way is to beg the "provider".
Erik Malund said:
The "power of" the open source movement exist where there are enough people interested in a given app that the quality becomes well policed, that does not happen for open source development of the "Joe Blow mods to GCC to make it compile for the Scrounge processor"

Well, in fact, you need also testers, documenters, front-end makers, packagers... Even if one is not expert enough to make the modifications, he can do lot of valuable work as mentioned.
And, a metter of fact, the AVR-mod of GCC was basically done by a single volunteer.

Give me the cheap and widely available big-RAM, 16-bit-pointer '51, and I will get you the gcc-mod done for it.
