By the way, nobody mentioned extended commands (except perhaps for the 16-bit ALU). There is one opcode unimplemented in '51, which can be used for such extension - although this means quite a significant incompatibility with the original '51. (Yes, I know, the XA uses it this way.)
You are mistaken, that is not the XA, it is the 251. When Philips and Intel discontinued the cooperation on the "16 bit '51" it was over Intels insistence on object compatibility. Philips saw that maintainling that would hinder making the ultimate chip and thus went with "source compatibility> IMHO neither "compatibility" makes any sense (what would you use it for), but, at least, the "source compatibility" does not hinder making the best chip that can be.
